How to search for words in Norwegian LEXIN:
Enter the word you would like to search for in the blank field above.
Press the
Search
button.
If the dictionary contains the word you searched for, information about this word will appear on the display.
A small flower (
) behind a word means that the word is illustrated. Press the flower if you would like to see the picture.
NB:
In March 2010 we changed the LEXIN search functionality. We hope that all users will approve the new solution.
In the new search you will get more hits than before. Five hits is displayed simultaneously. If you would like to see more, press the link
Next 5 hits
.
The new search is not merely looking for entry words (lemmas). It is searching for words in the entire dictionary article. The old search was only able to find entry words, e.g.
hus
og
katt
. The new search also finds inflected forms, e.g.
huset
og
katten
, and it finds words used in phrases, examples, etc.
The new search will also find words that
contain
the similar word or letters that you are searching for. If you are searching for e.g.
hus
, you will also find
husdyr
and
sykehus
(Bokmål) or
sjukehus
(Nynorsk). Earlier you had to search with
hus*
,
*hus
or
*hus*
to achieve this. The new search does this automatically. Do not use asterix (
*
) in your searches.
The new search may also find several words placed one after the other, e.g.
en katt
(Bokmål) or
ein katt
(Nynorsk).
(Consequently, the new search is looking more places and is finding more, but not if you are searching for words consisting of merely one or two letters. In such cases it will look only for entry words written exactly like your search word.)
The new search is aiming to display the most accurate hits first. It also displays your search word marked with yellow all the places it is found.
If the new search is empty, it will try to look for words
similar
to the one you entered, just in case you may have misspelled the search word. In such cases there will be no yellow in the search result(s).
